NEW YORK, USA: Spain and Lionel Messi-led Argentina go head-to-head against each other in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, July 19. While Spain have won six out of the seven games they have played en route to the final, Argentina have been victorious in each outing.
La Roja, however, have been meticulous in defence, having conceded just once in these seven matches. Luis de la Fuente’s men are the favourites coming into this FIFA World Cup final solely because their defence has not been breached more than once. Argentina, on the other hand, have already conceded seven times and have kept just two clean sheets. They will also become just the second country to defend their crown (Italy – 1934, 1938 and Brazil – 1958 and 1962).
Nonetheless, the side that scores more goals than its opponents wins football matches, and this is a rule of thumb that Argentina’s head coach Lionel Scaloni has drilled into his wards. And La Albiceleste have followed where their coach Scaloni and captain Lionel Messi have led – they have scored 19 goals so far, in stark contrast to their opponents of the night, who have scored a mere 13.

La Albiceleste chase their fourth crown (1978, 1986, 2022) and will join the likes of Italy and Germany on an elite list if they win. Only Brazil have won more FIFA World Cup titles (5).
Spain, meanwhile, are relative newcomers, having won their first title as recently as 2010. Argentina have the pedigree, as well as the entire world’s fervent wish to see Lionel Messi don the world champion tag perhaps for the last time in his career, but Spain have the tactical brilliance to make it over their former colony.
The managers know each other fairly well, too, with Scaloni having been a former pupil of de la Fuente’s at a UEFA workshop in Spain nearly a decade ago. Nonetheless, no familiarity and no friendship will come in between these two Hispanic nations on Sunday night, despite both speaking the same language, sharing the same culture, and playing starkly different styles of football.
