HYDERABAD, INDIA: Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) finally got their first win of the new Ligue 1 season, but the same fate continued to evade Tottenham Hotspur, who have now gone four games without a victory.
Erling Haaland’s goal from a suspiciously offside position made the headlines as Manchester City won the Manchester derby while Harry Kane struck to give Bayern Munich a timely victory.
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid overcame poor form to notch up big wins while Juventus were shocked by Sassuolo off the final kick. Here is a quick recap of everything that transpired in the top European leagues between September 11 and 14:
Premier League
Tottenham Hotspur’s goalless, and therefore winless, streak in the Premier League continued when Everton held them to a 0-0 draw. Manchester City earned bragging rights over their neighbours Manchester United in the Manchester derby thanks to a controversial goal from Erling Haaland that was not deemed offside.
Enzo Fernandez, despite being in an offside position, was not considered to be influencing the action. Chelsea came from behind via a Joao Pedro goal to draw 2-2 at Hull City, while refereeing decisions took the spotlight in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory at Sunderland. Former champions Liverpool were held by a resurgent Fulham for a goalless draw at home.
Serie A
The fourth round of the Serie A began with Lazio drawing 2-2 with AC Milan at home. Napoli edged Bologna out thanks to a crucial goal from Stanislav Lobotka while Juventus were upset 2-3 by Sassuolo away from home.
Edon Zhegrova’s brace appeared to have given the Old Lady at least a point from this clash before substitute Vasilije Adžić powered found the top right corner off the final kick of the game to win it for the hosts. Roma beat Torino 2-0 while Inter Milan overcame Udinese 5-3 in a high-scoring encounter thanks to five different scorers.
La Liga
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid overcame their stuttering performances last week by beating Rayo Vallecano and Real Sociedad, 4-1 and 3-0, respectively. Kylian Mbappe, put under pressure for not delivering when it matters the most, staged a strong comeback by scoring a couple of goals.
Defending champions Barcelona continued their upward march in La Liga after a comfortable 4-2 victory over Levante thanks to another Lamine Yamal brace. Sevilla, on the other side of the spectrum, edged Valencia out 1-0.
Bundesliga
Borussia Dortmund beat Paderborn 3-0, and RB Leipzig improved on this with a comprehensive 5-0 result over Hamburger SV. Harry Kane struck in the 72nd minute to give Bayern Munich a much-needed win over Elversberg after Maurice Krattenmacher had nullified Lennart Karl’s early goal.
The Bavarians were in red-hot form despite playing away from home: they had 72% of possession and took 28 shots, ending with an xG of 2.83. Borussia M’gladbach suffered a humiliating 0-5 loss at Freiburg while Bayer Leverkusen drew 2-2 at Augsburg.
Ligue 1
The fourth round of Ligue 1 started with a surprise as Marseille were beaten 0-1 by Rennes away from home. Monaco, subsequently, were held to a 1-1 draw at Strasbourg. The surprises continued with Lyon playing out a goalless draw at Paris FC. Lille, however, beat Troyes 2-0, with Ethan Mbappe doubling their lead in stoppage time.
Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), meanwhile, earned their first victory of the season thanks to Ferran Torres’ fifth-minute strike at Brest. Lille continue leading the table with 10 points, with Monaco and Rennes a close second and third, respectively. PSG are ranked seventh with one win in four matches.

In the Premier League, Manchester United were prevented from winning at Everton by a last-minute equaliser, while Luis Enrique’s PSG are yet to pick up their first victory of the new Ligue 1 season.
Prolific goalscorers Bayern Munich were held to a goalless draw in the Bundesliga, whereas in the Serie A, Inter Milan and Napoli battled it out for a narrow 3-2 result in favour of the former. Both Atletico and Real Madrid faced embarrassing defeats in La Liga ahead of crucial UEFA Champions League fixtures.

Premier League
The biggest result in the Premier League was Arsenal’s convincing 2-1 win over Chelsea, with Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard nullifying new signing Morgan Rogers’ second-minute strike.
Earlier on Sunday, Manchester United were served a shock when Ainsley Maitland-Niles equalised for Everton in a last-gasp wonderstrike from outside the box. The game ended 2-2.
Manchester City were expected to blow Coventry City into pieces, but they picked up a narrow 1-0 victory, while Liverpool beat another promotee, Ipswich Town, 2-0. Tottenham Hotspur’s winless start to the season remained intact after a goalless draw at Nottingham Forest.
Serie A
Inter Milan defeated Napoli 3-2 to warm up for their UEFA Champions League clash with José Mourinho’s Real Madrid midweek, while Roma saw Atalanta off thanks to a 2-1 scoreline at home.
Juventus will thank substitute centre-back Federico Gatti, whose stoppage-time header propelled them to a 1-1 draw with AC Milan, while Lazio secured an important 2-1 away win at Udinese, coming from behind to score twice.
La Liga
Title challengers and city rivals Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid were both upset in the fourth round of La Liga, losing 0-1 to Real Betis and 0-3 to Athletic Bilbao, respectively. Naturally, this will hurt their morale ahead of Champions League clashes with Inter Milan and Liverpool, respectively.
Defending champions Barcelona, however, were not affected by this wave of poor form in the air, beating highly-rated Valencia 5-0 thanks to Lamine Yamal’s brace. The Spanish teenager has already gone up to four goals this season.
Bundesliga
Bayer Leverkusen walloped Union Berlin to win 4-0 while Borussia Dortmund had to work hard to beat TSG Hoffenheim 3-2: the Black and Yellows came from behind to score all three goals after conceding two. Ridle Baku’s stoppage-time goal could not prevent RB Leipzig from falling to a 1-3 loss at Werder Bremen.
But the biggest shock of the gameweek came when unheralded Schalke held Bayern Munich to a goalless draw. Schalke’s achievement is of epic proportions since Die Roten kept 83% of possession and also took 15 shots, but to no avail.
Ligue 1
Lyon defeated Auxerre 3-1 in the Ligue 1 after taking a whopping 21 shots and 35 touches in their opponents’ box. Marseille were beaten 2-3 at home by Paris FC, who saw Mali striker Lassine Sinayoko emerge a hero by scoring a hat-trick.
But the biggest shock of the French league was reserved for AS Monaco, who defeated Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) away from home by a 2-1 scoreline. By doing this, Monaco also ensured PSG’s winless run in the new Ligue 1 season.
Despite leading early on thanks to a Marquinhos strike, PSG were torn into shreds by two second-half goals by the visitors, who now lead the league with nine points. PSG, meanwhile, are 13th with just two points.

HYDERABAD, INDIA: Whether it was Bruno Fernandes’ stunning hat-trick to bring Manchester United back from penury, or five different men finding the back of the net for Bayern Munich in their season opener, or shock defeats to Napoli and Bayer Leverkusen, a lot took place in Europe over the weekend.
Here is a quick recap of everything that transpired in the top European leagues between August 28 and August 31:
Premier League
Manchester City got the Premier League gameweek underway with a whopping 4-1 win over Crystal Palace, with last season’s Golden Boot award winner Erling Haaland hitting the ground running with a brace. Arsenal overcame Aston Villa 1-1, while Liverpool came from behind to draw Nottingham Forest 2-2.
Chelsea won a high-scoring 4-3 fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion, while Tottenham Hotspur’s poor start to the season continued with an embarrassing 0-2 defeat at home to Newcastle United. The show-stopper of the gameweek, however, was Bruno Fernandes, who scored a hat-trick and bagged an assist to help Manchester United beat Ipswich Town 5-2.
Serie A
Narrow victories were the order of this second gameweek of Serie A. AC Milan began with a 2-0 win over Venezia, with serial winners Juventus following suit with the same scoreline against Parma. Inter Milan and Lazio defeated Cagliari and Genoa, respectively, by similar-looking 1-0 scorelines.
Atalanta did the same against Bologna. Roma proved to be the exception, scoring four (thanks to Donyell Malen’s brace) and winning against Lecce, but Napoli were left shell-shocked after being treated to a surprising 1-2 loss at the Stadio Diego Maradona by Cesc Fabregas’ Como.
La Liga
The main challengers in La Liga: Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona, all galloped to massive victories in the third gameweek. Los Rojiblancos defeated Sevilla 3-1 away from home while their city neighbours, with Jose Mourinho back at the helm, saw Malaga off 4-0. On Monday night, Barcelona, shepherded by the young Lamine Yamal’s brace, put five goals past Rayo Vallecano and won 5-2.
Bundesliga
Bayern Munich got the new Bundesliga season off to a flyer by making their intentions clear: they beat Stuttgart 5-1, with five different scorers, and none of them bearing the name of an Englishman called Harry Kane.
Elversberg, playing in the Bundesliga for the first time, surprised Bayer Leverkusen with a 3-2 victory in their maiden outing. It was, however, routine as usual for RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund, who overcame Borussia M’gladbach and Hamburger by 3-0 and 2-0 scorelines, respectively.
Ligue 1
The biggest shocker of the second round of Ligue 1 came in its first game: Lille drew defending champions Paris Saint-Germain 2-2. Lyon, too, were held 1-1 by Le Havre at home, but Monaco made the most of their openings and picked up a convincing 2-0 victory over title challengers Marseille, with a German striker named after the French capital (Paris Brunner) scoring both goals.

Here is a quick recap of everything that transpired in the top European leagues between August 21 and August 23:
Premier League
The Premier League season began on Friday, August 21, with defending champions Arsenal thrashing recently-promoted Coventry City 3-0. Michael Carrick’s Manchester United were given a rude shock when they were beaten 0-2 at Hull City, another newly promoted club.
Manchester City, meanwhile, came from behind to beat AFC Bournemouth 2-1, but perhaps the most exciting clash took place between Newcastle United and Liverpool, in which Dominik Szoboszlai converted a penalty off the final kick of the game to equalise for the latter and end the game 2-2. Chelsea travel to play London rivals Fulham on Monday, August 24.
Serie A
Defending Serie A champions Inter Milan began the new season with a bang by decimating Monza 4-1. Napoli overcame Genoa 2-0, but Juventus had to be content with a narrow 1-0 victory over Frosinone.
Atalanta and AC Milan lost their clean sheets despite winning by lookalike 2-1 scorelines over Sassuolo and Torino, respectively. Lazio and Roma play their first Serie A match of the new season on Monday, against Bologna and Fiorentina, respectively.
La Liga
In La Liga, Barcelona made most of the headlines by beating Elche 5-0. The defending champions have now won their first game. Their main challengers, Real Madrid – with Jose Mourinho back at the helm – saw Espanyol off with a 2-1 win, whereas Sevilla beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 and Atletico Madrid and Villarreal shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw. Sevilla currently sit on top of the standings.
Bundesliga
The new Bundesliga season will begin on the forthcoming weekend: Friday, August 28, with Bayern Munich hosting VfB Stuttgart.
Ligue 1
Marseille started the new Ligue 1 season with a thumping 4-0 win over Strasbourg while defending champions Paris Saint-Germain were held 2-2 at Rennes. Monaco edged Le Havre out by a narrow but convincing 1-0 scoreline.
Meanwhile, Lille and Lyon beat Angers and Toulouse, respectively, by similar-looking 2-0 scorelines. Marseille are on top of the league table currently, with Lens coming second. PSG are seventh.
