MARGAO, INDIA: Churchill Brothers FC host Punjab FC in Gameweek 3 of the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Fatorda Stadium in Margao, Goa, on Sunday, October 25. While Churchill are currently ranked seventh in the table, Punjab are placed three spots above them in the same standings.

This is Churchill’s maiden season in the ISL, replacing Jamshedpur FC, who wound up their operations earlier this year. The club from Chandigarh, on the other hand, have played in the top division of Indian football for three seasons already, earning promotion after winning the I-League (now renamed IFL) in 2022-23.

In this article, we preview this interesting clash between two relatively new entrants in the league.

What are Churchill Brothers’ strengths?

Churchill stole all the headlines when they beat a strong Mumbai City FC 2-1 on their ISL debut in Gameweek 1. However, they were brought down to earth by defending champions East Bengal with a 0-4 drubbing soon afterwards. Coached by Dimitris Dimitriou, the Red Machines have preferred a low-pressing yet counter-attacking style of football in both games, albeit with contrasting results.

Their central midfielders dropped deep and allowed their fullbacks to drive forward against Mumbai City, but the same ploy put them in deep waters against East Bengal. Against the former, their wingers received additional support from their fullbacks by way of crosses and lobbed passes. Against East Bengal, however, they were marked closely and rarely given much space to express themselves.

Churchill Brothers’ predicted lineup vs Punjab FC [4-2-3-1]: Kadir; Deny, Bora, Assisi, Gaonkar; Luwang, Salou; Lekay, Gutierrez, Barretto; Okoli.

Which style of football do Punjab FC prefer?

Punjab are one of the most possession-driven football clubs in the country. While they rely a lot on their target man Raphael Messi Bouli to deliver in the final third, most of the magic is cooked using short, accurate passes by Bijoy Varghese and Nikhil Prabhu. The Shers began the season with a convincing 2-1 win over Odisha FC at home (where Messi Bouli struck both off the first and last kicks of the game).

A rare slip by Varghese inside his own box allowed Mumbai City to take the lead in Punjab’s previous outing, but local lad Gurkirat Singh’s 90th-minute strike ensured a 1-1 draw for Pavlos Dermitzakis’ men. Punjab FC’s strength lies in their youth, with youngsters Sanathoi Singh, Bishu Sharma, Vishal Yadav, Muhammad Suhail and Arshvir Singh operating with a confidence unseen among veterans.

Punjab FC’s predicted lineup vs Churchill Brothers [4-2-3-1]: Arshdeep; Uvais, Varghese, Prabhu, Lhungdim; Shabong, Bishu; Suhail, Raposo, Yadav; Messi Bouli.

Churchill Brothers vs Punjab FC ISL match prediction

While Churchill have impressed so far in their maiden ISL season, Punjab are operating at a different level altogether. Midfielder Ricky Shabong’s ability to drop deep in defensive midfield when they are without possession, and then quickly alter his shape to press forward as the number ’10 ‘ when he receives the ball, makes him the critical cog in Punjab’s wheel.

Winger Suhail is renowned both for cutting back inside and taking defenders on in 1v1 situations. This fluidity makes the visitors dangerous on the counter-attack. The Shers have an upper hand over their opponents and are expected to either win or draw. They would have beaten Mumbai City, too, if not for the unfortunate slip that forced defender Varghese to concede a penalty to Noufal PN.

Predicted result: Churchill Brothers 1-2 Punjab FC
