DELHI, INDIA: The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) is in the news for all the wrong reasons. After the success of the 2026 Asian Games, the federation has made headlines for the antics of its senior office-bearers Ajay Singh and Pramod Kumar. While the former is the president of the organisation, the latter serves as its secretary general. But what exactly happened between the two?

Earlier this week, on October 13, President Singh issued a letter relieving secretary general Kumar from his post. The letter made several allegations against Kumar and mentioned that he was indulging in financial malpractice and making attempts to destabilise the organisation. Singh also accused Kumar of intimidating and maligning senior BFI officials (read: Singh) in the media.

Now, Indian sports lovers will remember that just a few days ago, Kumar had initiated a no-confidence motion against Singh on several grounds. Writing to India’s prime minister Narendra Modi, sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya and World Boxing president Gennadiy Golovkin, Kumar had accused Singh of intimidation to prevent the no-confidence motion from going ahead.

Pramod Kumar also accused the Boxing Federation of India’s executive director of intimidation

In his letter, Secretary General Kumar had accused Col (retd) Arun Malik, executive director of the Boxing Federation of India, of being in league with President Singh and preventing the organisation from being administered well. Kumar had also mentioned the fact that his official email address was revoked by the Boxing Federation of India without any notice being given.

Now, with President Singh removing Secretary General Kumar from his administrative duties, the feud has transmuted into another form altogether. It is clear that the top officials of the Boxing Federation of India do not see eye to eye, which can be a big blow to the sport, especially at a time when corporate giant Indian Oil agreed to contribute INR 40 crore over two years for athlete development.

Boxing was one of the stars for India at the 2026 Asian Games, bagging six medals in total, three of which were gold. Following his removal from the post of secretary general of the Boxing Federation of India, Kumar appeared nonchalant and mentioned that President Singh’s days at the helm are numbered. The no-confidence vote is expected to take place on October 28.
