MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA: India’s challenge in the ongoing Australian Open came to an end on Monday, January 26, when Yuki Bhambri and his partner Andre Goransson were defeated in the third round of the men’s doubles event by Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos of Brazil (7-6, 6-3) in the Show Court Arena, Melbourne. Bhambri had earlier bowed out of the mixed doubles event in the first round, being defeated by Tim Putz and Zhang Shuai. His partner in this event was Nicole Melichar-Martinez of the USA.
On Monday, Bhambri and Goransson started well against their opponents and took the first set deep. However, the Brazilians were sharper and held their nerve till the end, picking up a 9-7 result in the tie-breaker. In the second set of the match, the Bhambri-Goransson duo were broken early on, and Luz-Matos went on to script a comfortable victory. Bhambri and Goransson had earlier defeated James Duckworth-Cruz Hewitt of Australia in the first round, and Santiago Gonzalez-David Pel in the second round of this iconic tournament.
