BENGALURU, INDIA: All eyes will be on the India vs Panama international friendly that will take place at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday, September 25. Khalid Jamil’s men will be pushed to the brink by 44th-ranked Panama, who also participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

India, who are nearly a hundred spots below their opponents (138), know that they are no match for the Central Americans, but that will not prevent them from putting up a fair fight. The visitors, who are preparing for the CONCACAF Nations League later this year, will try various combinations out to understand what works for them.

In this article, we preview the India vs Panama game, take a look at both teams’ strengths and weaknesses, and aim to predict the result:

The Indian football team’s strengths

Under Khalid Jamil, the Indian football team has evolved into a unit that can comfortably shield the ball. Against Los Canaleros, this trait will be tested severely. Jamil, who likes to play with a four-man defence and four-man midfield, may decide on continuing in the same vein instead of resorting to a five-man defence for additional support.

While lacking in creativity, India have often flourished when using short passes. They usually falter when they try to thread the ball through the lines. Los Canaleros’ strong physical presence in midfield may push India to the wide areas, but the Blue Tigers cannot shy away from using aerial balls, as England did against the same opponents in the World Cup.

India vs Panama: India predicted lineup [4-4-2]: Sandhu; Mishra, Anwar, Pramveer, Abhishek; Kuruniyan, Thapa, Apuia, Samad; Lalrindika, Williams.

Panama’s strengths

The visitors have always been a highly physical side, but they have now evolved into becoming more technical in midfield. Their fluidity in formation also allows them to use the wide areas well, where they will challenge the Indian football team constantly. Coach Thomas Christiansen likes flexibility in his formations.

Their strong midfield is likely to be helmed by Adalberto Carrasquilla, and a three-man backline can quickly shift to five in attack when in possession. When this happens, Panama’s two central pivots drop back to support their defence. Los Canaleros can be tied down if they are prevented from shifting their shape quickly.

India vs Panama: Panama predicted lineup [3-4-2-1]: Mosquera; Ramos, Andrade, Córdoba; Gutiérrez, Carrasquilla, Harvey, Murillo; Rodríguez, Martínez; Fajardo.

Prediction

Panama have the upper hand and should coast to a comfortable victory. But India are no minnows, and will make it hard for Los Canaleros to win the ball. If the Indian football team keep possession for long periods of time, they are likely to draw the visitors out of their defensive shape.

This, naturally, will give the hosts some space to express themselves on the counter-attack in the final third. Nonetheless, the visitors’ quality will ensure that they win comfortably. India can consider themselves victorious if they manage to beat Los Canaleros’ fiercely protective zonal defensive unit and score at least once.

PREDICTED SCORE: Panama 3-1 India
