MUMBAI, INDIA: Reliance Foundation Young Champs (RFYC) defeated Hope United 5-4 in a stunning encounter to seal their berth in the semifinals of the ongoing Mumbai Premier League (MPL) recently. Coached by former Hyderabad FC boss Shameel Chembakath, RFYC struck first in this clash via Lalmuanuip, who was responsible for finishing off a quick counter-attacking move.

Konthoujam Kingson then made the most of a defensive error by Hope to double RFYC’s lead a few minutes later. The best, it appeared, was yet to come as Shyam Krishna chose the 34th minute to strike a beautiful goal from distance. RFYC appeared capable of going into the half-time break with a clean sheet, but Hope United reduced their deficit to two by quick goals from Rishi and Asadul Abdul.

Hope United completed their comeback over RFYC in the second half, but parity did not last long

Soon after the restart, Hope United’s comeback was completed when Rishi was able to convert from the penalty spot, sending panic waves down the RFYC bench. However, Chembakath’s side sensed that all was not lost, since Wangphrang Phawa soon restored their supremacy with a header from a cross. Then, in the 68th minute, Vanlalthazuala restored their two-goal cushion.

The game was, however, not over, as Chaitan scored a brilliant free kick in the 71st minute to keep things alive. The last 19 minutes of this game saw spirited challenges from both sides, but it was RFYC who hung on till the end without conceding again. With this win, RFYC went on top of the playoff group with six points in their kitty, and confirmed their semifinal berth in the MPL.
