KANDY, SRI LANKA: Australia, the winners of the 2021 T20 World Cup, were sent crashing out of the present edition of the tournament in the group stage itself on Tuesday, February 17. This happened after the game between Zimbabwe and Ireland got washed out in Pallekele, Kandy.
Persistent rains ensured that no play was possible at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, giving Zimbabwe the ticket to become the seventh side to enter the Super 8 stage of the tournament. The southern African side are unbeaten in this tournament so far, winning two of the three games they have played, with this washout being the third.
They have garnered 5 points already, while Australia, who were sent packing, have amassed only two so far. The Aussies have won just one out of the three games they have played so far, and even a win in their final outing against minnows Oman will not help their cause, since their tally will only go up to 4 points then.
This is not the first time Australia were sent packing in the group stage of a T20 World Cup
Interestingly, this is not the first time Australia have bowed out of the group stage of a T20 World Cup; they suffered a similar ignominy in the 2009 edition of the tournament as well. Back then, the Kangaroos were defeated by Sri Lanka and the West Indies to be shown the door.
In this T20 World Cup campaign, they were beaten by co-hosts Sri Lanka as well as by apparent minnows Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka, who lead Group C with three wins in as many matches, have also made it through to the Super 8s alongside Zimbabwe.
