GUWAHATI, INDIA: Jithin MS was the hero in NorthEast United vs Mohun Bagan in the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Monday, October 12. The NorthEast United attacker struck in the dying moments of the game (90+1) to hand the home team a narrow victory to kickstart the new season.
Mohun Bagan were dominant throughout the game, but imprecision in the final third proved to be their downfall. The entirety of the NorthEast United vs Mohun Bagan clash was dictated by the side from Kolkata, who had 55% of the ball and an impressive xG of 1.48. However, the Mariners could put just six of their 25 shots they took on target.
NorthEast, in comparison, appeared muted, but took their chances when they could. In stoppage time, the ball was crossed into the box by Nikola Ninkovic, and the rebound struck fiercely at the Bagan goal by Antonio Moyano. As the ball bounced off the upright, Jithin, finding himself at the right place at the right time, drove it home past Vishal Kaith’s outstretched arms.
NorthEast United vs Mohun Bagan: The visitors could have got on the scoresheet late on via Suhail Ahmed Bhat in the ISL
The goal proved to be decisive in this NorthEast United vs Mohun Bagan clash in the ISL even though the visiting side found several opportunities going begging via substitute Suhail Ahmed Bhat. One such chance presented itself in the 86th minute when NorthEast United’s goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh misplaced a pass from the back straight to Bagan’s Miguel Ferreira.
The Brazilian, finding himself in a 2v1 situation, took his time to set Bhat up, only for the assistant referee to raise his flag and declare the latter offside. A few moments later, after they had conceded, Mohun Bagan could have inched ahead via Bhat yet again, but Gurmeet’s brave punching skills protected the home camp. The Highlanders, with three points, go up to the fourth spot in the ISL table.
