GLASGOW, SCOTLAND: India have made a splashing start to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. They have already won four medals, including a prized gold. Mirabai Chanu, India’s star weightlifter, has delivered the nation’s first gold medal by winning the women’s 48kg event.
Rishikanta Singh had earlier won a silver medal in the men’s 60kg weightlifting event. In the same sport, Raja Muthupandi later secured a silver medal in the men’s 65kg category. In para powerlifting, meanwhile, Jhandu Kumar won a well-deserved bronze medal in the men’s division.
India has a massive 122-member contingent in this year’s Commonwealth Games across eight able-bodied (athletics, artistic gymnastics, bowls, boxing, judo, swimming, track cycling, weightlifting) and five integrated para-sports categories (para athletics, para powerlifting, para swimming, para track cycling and 3×3 wheelchair basketball).

Are there any other medal prospects for India?
India have several medal prospects in the ongoing Games. On 27 July itself, several athletes will be competing for medals. Gyaneshwari Yadav will contest in the women’s 53kg weightlifting final, and has a good chance of bagging a medal. Protishta Samanta, meanwhile, is in the final of the women’s vault in artistic gymnastics.
Weightlifting continues to be India’s biggest hope, with Bindyarani Devi making it to the final of the women’s 58kg final. In para athletics, Sharmila Dhankar and Shilpa K Shyla will look to make India proud in the women’s shot put F57 Final. Later in the day, swimmer Sajan Prakash will contest in the men’s 200m butterfly final.
In para athletics, Rakeshbhai Bhatt and Shreyansh Trivedi will be in the men’s 100m T38 final, while swimmer Aryan Nehra will hope for a medal while contesting the men’s 800m final. Another major prospect for winning a medal is weightlifter V Ajaya Babu, who has already made it to the men’s 79kg final.
