HOUSTON, USA: Some teams arrive at a FIFA World Cup hoping to surprise. But neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Portugal arrive expected to merely contend. That expectation is hardly new. For decades, Portuguese football has produced some of the game’s finest talents. Eusébio, Luís Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo have all carried the hopes of a nation at football’s biggest tournament.

Yet despite the quality that has passed through its ranks, Portugal remain a country still searching for their first FIFA World Cup title. Sixty years have passed since their best finish. In 1966, inspired by Eusébio’s nine goals, Portugal reached the semi-finals before eventually finishing third. It remains the closest the nation has come to football’s greatest prize.

Since then, there have been flashes of promise and moments of heartbreak. The golden generation of the early 2000s reached the semi-finals in Germany in 2006, only to fall 0-1 to France. More recently, Portugal’s 2022 squad appeared capable of mounting a serious challenge after a dominant 6-1 victory over Switzerland in the Round of 16 stage. Instead, their campaign ended abruptly in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup with a shock 0-1 defeat to Morocco.

Portugal have possessed talent, but not breakthroughs

The pattern is familiar. Portugal have often possessed the talent required to compete with the world’s best. What they have lacked is the final breakthrough. That is why this tournament feels significant. Not because Portugal are overwhelming favourites, but because they arrive with one of the most complete squads in the competition.

Much of the attention will inevitably focus on Cristiano Ronaldo. At 41, he is preparing for what is expected to be his sixth and final FIFA World Cup. Few players have enjoyed a longer relationship with the tournament. Cristiano Ronaldo made his World Cup debut in 2006 and remains in pursuit of the one major honour missing from an extraordinary career.

Train the mind. Master the game. Discover the mental edge that top athletes and performers use to win — both on and off the field.

Yet reducing Portugal’s hopes to Cristiano Ronaldo alone would ignore the strength of the team around him. Rúben Dias provides leadership and stability in defence. Bernardo Silva remains among the most intelligent midfielders in international football. João Neves, Vitinha and Bruno Fernandes offer energy, creativity and control in possession. Across the pitch, Portugal possess depth that previous generations often lacked.

This is the most balanced Portugal squad at a FIFA World Cup

In many ways, this is the most balanced FIFA World Cup squad of the Cristiano Ronaldo era. For years, Portugal were viewed as a talented team built around a global superstar. Today, they appear to be genuine contenders whose biggest star happens to be Cristiano Ronaldo. That distinction matters.

Tournament football is rarely won by individuals alone. It is won by squads capable of navigating injuries, tactical adjustments and moments of adversity. Portugal possess that depth, and it is one of the reasons expectations surrounding them have continued to grow. There is also an emotional dimension to this campaign.

Throughout the tournament, Portugal will carry the memory of Diogo Jota, who passed away in a car accident in July 2025. The Liverpool forward’s absence will be felt by teammates and supporters alike. While football inevitably moves forward, some players leave a mark that extends beyond statistics and trophies. Jota was one of them. His memory will accompany Portugal through every stage of this journey.

If that adds emotion to the story, the tournament itself adds uncertainty. The opening days of the 2026 FIFA World Cup have already underlined how unpredictable this competition may become. So-called ‘smaller’ nations have proven to be organised and fearless. Several traditional powers have been pushed harder than expected.

Cristiano Ronaldo carries the weight of expectations

The gap between favourites and outsiders appears narrower than in previous editions. For Portugal, that serves as both a warning and an opportunity. The route to glory will not be straightforward. No team can rely solely on reputation. Every contender will have to earn their place. Portugal have the quality to do exactly that.

They possess experience, technical excellence and trusted performers across every area of the pitch. They also possess something harder to measure: a sense that this generation may be approaching its defining moment. The challenge now is turning potential into achievement. For decades, Portugal have chased a World Cup that has always remained slightly beyond reach.

They have produced iconic players, memorable teams and unforgettable moments. What they have not produced is a world champion. That is the weight this squad carries into the 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup. The weight of history. The weight of expectation. And perhaps, for Ronaldo and Portugal alike, the weight of one final opportunity to make history.
