COLOMBO, SRI LANKA: India and Pakistan meet in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, February 15. A lot of controversy surrounded this fixture, as Pakistan had earlier announced their intention to boycott it for unknown reasons.

Now, however, they have been instructed by their government to participate in this clash. This has, quite naturally, lent a touch of drama to an already emotionally-charged fixture. India have the upper hand since they are the defending champions, but Pakistan are an unpredictable side good enough to topple even the best on their day.

In this piece, we take a look at the key player battles and matchups that can decide the result of this match:

Jasprit Bumrah vs Sahibzada Farhan

One of the most interesting clashes will take place between Jasprit Bumrah and Sahibzada Farhan. The Indian seamer missed their first game against the USA after being incapacitated, but returned in time to bowl his full quota of four overs against Namibia, picking up one wicket in the process.

Pakistan’s Farhan, on the other hand, comes into this fixture with scores of 47 and 73, and is in prime form. Bumrah, known for getting the ball to skid through, can trouble Farhan early on when it is new, but if the latter gets into good positions and picks up the ball from the former’s hand, he will not have much trouble scoring some quick boundaries.

Varun Chakaravarthy vs Babar Azam

The battle between Varun Chakaravarthy and Babar Azam in the middle overs will surely be one to watch out for. Chakaravarthy is the mystery spinner in India’s lineup and is renowned for being able to fox batters with his impeccable lines and lengths. Former Pakistan captain Azam, meanwhile, has scripted a memorable return to T20 cricket with an unbeaten 50 against Australia recently, as well as 46 against the USA.

Azam, despite being known to be a good player of spin, may be taken unawares by Chakaravarthy’s lack thereof. He may also take some time to get used to the pace used by the Tamil Nadu spinner. In its modern avatar, the middle overs are where a T20 game gets decided, and this matchup will have a big role in deciding its outcome.

Ishan Kishan vs Shaheen Afridi

With Ishan Kishan having stormed his way back into the India T20 side, things look upbeat. The southpaw is known to partner alongside Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order and go for expansive strokes right from the offing. Kishan is known for timing the ball well and placing it into gaps, which helps his cause inside the power play when only two fielders are allowed outside the circle.

He is also in good form, having scored one century and two half-centuries in his last four innings. Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi, however, has picked up just two wickets so far in this World Cup and appears to be saving his best for India. He can get the ball to move away from left-handers, and hence, will be a tough customer to handle for Kishan, whose footwork against the new ball leaves a lot to be desired.
