MIDDLESBROUGH, ENGLAND: Manchester United’s winter target Hayden Hackney has summarily turned down any ideas of moving out from his current club, Middlesbrough, on deadline day of the ongoing January transfer window.

The 23-year-old found himself in demand after former Boro manager Michael Carrick was installed as the Red Devils’ interim head coach after Ruben Amorim’s departure in January. However, Hackney, on Sunday, February 1, confirmed that his sole aim was to get his current club promoted to the Premier League. Middlesbrough are currently ranked 2nd in the Championship.

“No. I’m really happy. The manager [Kim Hellberg] has got me playing the way I enjoy playing, getting the best out of me. So yeah, I’m really enjoying it. This is what I’ve wanted to do ever since I was a kid, play for Middlesbrough,” said Hackney.

“Winning promotion with Middlesbrough would mean everything to me” – Hayden Hackney on interest from Manchester United

Hackney also said that getting promoted to the top tier of English football with the Boro was a ‘dream’ for him, and something that he has been looking forward to for a very long time. The defensive midfielder has 10 goal contributions across all competitions this season, of which nine (four goals and five assists) have come in the Championship.

“And where we are in the league at the minute, as long as we just keep going, we feel confident. Winning promotion with Middlesbrough would mean everything to me. I don’t know how I’d be, but I know I’d be over the moon. That is the dream,” added Hackney.

Manchester United have enjoyed a sudden uptick in form ever since Carrick arrived in the dugout. They have won three games in a row, including two blockbusters against Manchester City (2-0) and Arsenal (3-2).

On Sunday, February 1, substitute Benjamin Sesko scored a stoppage-time winner to help them pick up all three points against Fulham (3-2) at home. Manchester United are currently fourth in the standings with 41 points, 12 behind leaders Arsenal.
