DELHI, INDIA: The central government has indicated that Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will be dismantled in favour of a 102-acre ‘Sports City’ soon. The stadium, which was built in the late 90s and was renovated ahead of the corruption-tainted 2010 Commonwealth Games, will be transformed into a multi-sport facility, the likes of which the government has taken inspiration from Qatar and Australia.
As reported by the Bridge, athlete housing, flexible indoor arenas, and high-performance training centres are being looked into by the government ahead of the overhaul. While no date has been officially announced, the Tribune understands that work could begin as early as next year. Currently, the stadium houses only football matches, and was the home for Punjab FC in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 Indian Super League seasons.
With Hyderabad FC having rebranded themselves as Sporting Club Delhi, it remains to be seen which venue will be used by the latter in the upcoming season. Since Punjab already use the Nehru, Delhi could be asked to play at the Ambedkar Stadium, located in Feroz Shah Kotla, next to the iconic cricket ground. The Nehru Stadium also hosts cultural events and music concerts, the latest of which was American hip-hop star Travis Scott’s ‘Circus Maximus’ on 18 and 19 October.
