LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND: Xabi Alonso, who is rumoured to take over as Liverpool’s head coach next summer, has reportedly asked the club to make two priority signings. The former Bayer Leverkusen manager wants Liverpool to sign Arda Guler (Real Madrid) and Marc Pubill (Atletico Madrid), as per Football 365.
Alonso, who was last seen in action with Real Madrid earlier this season before being handed the sack, is expected to reunite with his Leverkusen proteges, Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, at Anfield. Current head coach Arne Slot won the Premier League in 2024-25, but will not be able to do so this time around.
The Reds are currently fifth in the league table with 49 points from 31 matches, and harbour no aspirations for defending their title. Arsenal and Manchester City are among the contenders for winning the Premier League this season, with 70 and 61 points in their respective bags, with seven matches to go.
Alonso, a former Liverpool player, is most famously known for being a part of the side that won the 2004-05 UEFA Champions League by beating AC Milan in the final in Istanbul. The Spaniard also won the FA Cup with the Reds next season before moving to Real Madrid and winning the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League. The central midfielder ended his playing days at Bayern Munich.

Although Liverpool are alive in the UEFA Champions League, they were knocked out by Crystal Palace following a 0-3 loss in the fourth round of the EFL Cup. They are alive in the FA Cup as well, with a highly awaited quarterfinal clash with Manchester City coming up on 4 April. It is predominantly their inability to retain the league title that has threatened Slot’s job and favoured Alonso.
As a coach, he is most widely known for leading little-known Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in 2023-24, remaining unbeaten throughout the season. Leverkusen, in fact, completed the league treble this season, winning the DFB Pokal and Super Cup. They could have done the quadruple too, but fell short in the UEFA Europa League final against Atalanta.
